Ruby Throated Hummingbirds
The Ruby Throated Hummingbird is a common bird in the east, and they are also the only species of hummingbird in the PointBird area. Males have a red throat and a dark green back. the female does not have a red throat, instead it has a white throat. The female also has a light green back. The Ruby throated hummingbird is a bird that does not get along with other hummingbirds! often, a hummingbird currently at a feeder will chase away newcomers, who will then have to wait for the hummingbird to finish eating before they can have some food, unlike other species that get along very well. Just like other hummingbirds, the Ruby Throated Hummingbird sees the colour red very well, and is attracted to it. You should not put red liquid in your hummingbird feeder. As long as your feeder has some red on it you should be fine.
Hanging a feeder
the image on the left is the location of my hummingbird feeder. I hung it in a low tree avoiding direct sunlight and avoiding direct shade (that is not a problem) the picture below shows my feeder up close. if you notice the red nectar, that is Not homemade, that is store bought nectar. though I found out that the homemade nectar works better. (homemade nectar recipe below) though my feeder came with hummingbird powder that you mix with a certain amount of water. when choosing a feeder, just pick one with a fair amount of red and some flowers for the hummers to drink nectar out of. mine also has a perch on it so they can rest. just pick a feeder you like and that people recommend. mine worked in the first week! when hanging a feeder, try to choose a place where people do not walk by or hang out around a whole lot. they will not come. try to hang it in a nice, calm place. some things you should think about when hanging a feeder is 1. don't hang it too high. why? because it would too hard to clean and replace liquid. 2. don't hang it too low. why? hummingbirds don like their food close to the ground. use my pictures as an example. not too high and not too low
